Special: Rajinikanth: The evergreen Superstar

Rajinikanth: The evergreen SuperstarActor Rajinikanth has been the Superstar of Indian cinema for long time and no other actor can take his title of Superstar.Sandalwood producer Rockline Venaktesh made headlines when he announced his project with none other than south Indian legend Rajinikanth! The producer signed on the actor for the Tamil film Lingaa.
While the film stars top actresses including Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty, the man to go home with the highest remuneration is rumoured to be Thalaivaa. Apparently, Rajinikanth took home a whopping Rs 60 crore for the film. Though we don't have an official confirmation of this, we believe this could be true.

Recently, the film's audio was launched in Chennai during which Rajinikanth spoke to the audience about the making of the film and his experience of working with the director and producer.

Let's face it. In the posters of his latest movie 'Lingaa', which will hit the box-office on December 12, his 64th birthday, superstar Rajinikanth doesn't look a day over 40. But keeping the sexagenarian superstar—with his rapidly depleting hair and ivory stubble—looking wrinkle-free and 20 years younger on camera isn't as easy as his customary flick of a stick of chewing gum.

It has taken years of strategic styling to create Rajinikanth's on-screen persona, say make-up artists, producers and directors, who have helped keep an ageing star from losing his twinkle. They admit, though, that Rajinikanth does most of the heavy lifting himself.

For instance, say those who have worked with him for years, Rajinikanth was and still is, one of the only actors who is seen off screen without make-up. "He has never resorted to a nip, tuck or lift to appear younger. Many years ago, he was rumoured to have had a little lip correction, but that is all," says a crew member of 'Sivaji'.

People who have worked with him for years say that with Rajinikanth, styling was never a problem. "It was because of two things - his wonderful head of hair and dark complexion. Together they gave him a very stylish and youthful look on screen," says make-up artist R Sundaramurti, who styled Rajinikanth in his debut film 'Apoorva Ragangal' (1975) and worked with him until 'Chandramukhi' (2005).

"He also believes a strict diet and meditation are enough to keep him looking and feeling young," says Sundaramurti. Rajinikanth's current make-up artist Bhanu Bashyam, who has worked with him for a decade, has been quoted as saying he has flawless skin.

Rajinikanth took strong objection to an aspiring filmmaker's allegations that the story of Lingaa has been plagiarised from his script, based on the life of Colonel John Pennycuick, a British engineer behind the construction of the Mullaperiyar dam, which he had written for a movie titled 'Mullai 999'.

Trouble began brewing last week, when KV Ravi Rathinam, an aspiring filmmaker from Madurai, lodged a petition against the makers of Rajinikanth starrer Lingaa alleging that they had ripped off his work. In a sudden turn of events, KS Ravikumar, who directed the film, and Rajinikanth himself filed a counter affidavit claiming that Lingaa is based on a story written by Mr. Ponkumaran.

In his affidavit, Rajinikanth accused the petitioner that the plagiarism allegations on his film have been levied to tarnish his image. "The name, fame and repute enjoyed by me worldwide have been tarnished as if the film 'Lingaa' is a product of a copy-cat. I have been roped into unnecessary controversy. I hereby reserve my right to proceed against the petitioner for damages. Besides, a film needs to have 13 continuous scenes similar to that of the script written by the complainant for it to be considered as plagiarism. A bare reading of the affidavit filed by the petitioner does not disclose such an allegation," Rajinikanth said, adding that the subject of Mullaperiyar dam and nationalisation of rivers cannot be claimed as a copyright.

The film's audio was launched recently in Chennai and it's expected to hit the screens in mid December. Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty have played the lead roles opposite Rajinikanth in this film.

Superstar Rajinikanth-starrer "Lingaa," scheduled for release on his birthday on December 12, is an "unauthorized copy" of a Telugu film starred by Chiranjeevi, a producer has told Madras high court.

M/s Balaji Studios Private Ltd, Saligramam, Chennai, said it had purchased the Telugu film "Indra," starred by Chiranjeevi and Sonali Bindre. It said all rights of the film were purchased in 2010 and it intended to remake it in Tamil soon.

Noting that the film was about a man surviving the murders of his family members and his return and success in building a dam for the villagers, the producer said the storyline of "Lingaa" had been an unauthorised copy of "Indra."

He wanted the high court to hold up the release of "Lingaa" till the copyright infringement issue was sorted out in the court.

However, K S Ravikumar, director of "Lingaa," denied the allegations and said the case had been filed for publicity.

Justice R Subbiah, before whom the matter came up for admission on Tuesday, adjourned the matter to December 12.
