Stupid Soi Lek doesn’t get hudud stand, says Muhyiddin
The statement by the new Terengganu Mentri Besar, Datuk Idris Jusoh that the Barisan Nasional state government will only decide whether to repeal the hudud law passed by the PAS government after the court decides on its legitimacy is most shocking.
It is an immediate betrayal of Barisan Nasional pledge in the recent 2004 general election that it would put right all the wrongs committed by the PAS state government.
Idris’ claim that it is sub judice to talk about any repeal of the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Enactment (Hudud and Qisas) gazetted last October shows the new Mentri Besar’s abysmal ignorance of the law, and he should consult the State Legal Adviser or the Attorney-General before he continues to make a fool of himself on legal and constitutional questions.
It is not sub judice for the new Mentri Besar to announce that the new Barisan Nasional state government will repeal the hudud law passed by PAS in the first meeting of the new Terengganu State Assembly.
During the recent general election, MCA and Gerakan had attacked the PAS hudud law in Terengganu as unconstitutional and an example why PAS’ Islamic State is completely unsuitable and unacceptable in a plural Malaysia.
MCA and Gerakan Presidents, Ong Ka Ting and Lim Keng Yaik, and their national leaders should ask for an emergency meeting of the Barisan Nasional Supreme Council to take the policy decision that the new BN Terengganu State Government should immediately repeal the hudud law of previous PAS government – making it the first item of business in the first meeting of the new Terengganu State Assembly.
Or have Ka Ting and Keng Yaik found the former PAS hudud law completely acceptable just because the Barisan Nasional has toppled the PAS government in Terengganu. If so, this will be the most blatant and quickest example of the MCA and Gerakan Presidents and their national leaders saying one thing during the general election campaign and doing the exact opposite after the polls.

Islamophobia refers to unfounded fear of and hostility towards Islam. Such fear and hostility leads to discriminations against Muslims, exclusion of Muslims from mainstream political or social process, stereotyping, the presumption of guilt by association, and finally hate crimes. In twenty-first century America, all of these evils are present and in some quarters tolerated. While America has made major progress in racial harmony, there is still a long road ahead of us to reach our destination when all people are judged on the content of their character and neither on the color of their skin or their faith.
Islamophobia as a term and as a phenomena gained currency in part due to the popular thesis developed by Francis Fukuyama and Samuel Huntington that argued about an impending clash of civilization between Islam and the West. When 9-11 happened, the people already predisposed to viewing Islam with suspicion jumped on this bandwagon and through a multitude of primarily right wing outlets have been successful in creating a climate of extreme prejudice, suspicion and fear against Muslims. This sentiment has also been aided by many pro-Israeli commentators such as Daniel Pipes, Steve Emerson, Judith Miller, and Bernard Lewis among many others.
It's tough to deal with abusive comments that keep coming every day. There are regular such emails and comments on the posts. Most of these guys don't even bother to read the posts and it appears they are full of hate towards Islam and Muslims.
I was forced to start moderating comments sometime back when I felt that almost every day I was getting such comments that used to hurt and unsettle me. Often, they are full of so much hatred that you shudder and think, is this real? How much percent of people in this country hate Muslim and do they really hate us so much?
Then I would always console myself that cyberspace is different from normal world. Here people who don't have the cheek to say or do anything openly, can make anonymous comments or send emails, and they are a handful of people who keep doing that regularly and makes you feel that there are so many Islamophobes.
You write a post on harmony, the ganga-jumni culture and then you get an email that starts with'Saale Kat*&*' and keeps on telling you every atrocity which he believes Muslims have committed on him and his ancestors interspersed with English and Hindutani gaalis.
I feel bad, very bad.
No matter how much you think that you won't give a damn to them, the fact is that everytime you get such a mail or comment, it hurts. Sometimes when it is terribly abusive, you feel why not get this guy tracked and booked for his action.
After all, if someone abuses you openly on the street, it is tough to act against him legally but if someone sends you an email or writes an abusive post, it is possible to teach him a lesson that he will not forget.
The evidence is strong, the IT [Information Technolog] Act makes any such crime punishable and the sentence is much more but nobody bothers. Sometime you feel you should take the lead and get a few guys caught. At least, this will send the message across. Racism and hatespeak aren't taken seriously in India yet and people often forget, but it's a serious crime.
If you hate me just for being a Muslim and will keep calling me names, it is irrational. You can write in proper and decent language. Anonymity gives you freedom to abuse. You don't fear that a friend of you, who is a Muslim, may come to know that you have such deep biases. But if you are courageous enough, why don't you stop every passing Muslim on the street and abuse him.
I still want to believe that such guys don't form more than 1% of the populace.
Write your full name, address and also post your photo, if you dare, in forums, sites and blogs. Else talk in a civilised way. Blame me, be critical but enough of abuses. Don't wear the mask of anonymity to spread hate on internet.
Sometimes I really wonder, what could be the cause of such deep hate?
Today there are bombs exploding and Islam is linked to terrorism. But why was such a similar hatred, 16 years ago or even before that, when Babri Masjid was destroyed and when Muslims were openly abused.
Tab Tushtikaran thaa...the so-called appeasement of Muslims by politicians. And people had suddenly become such experts in history that they could tell you how many atrocities Aurangzeb and Babur had done on Hindus in this country. Even then, it was not easy for Muslim to get a house on rent (I am not talking about jobs or any other thing).
Simple hatred. Why?
We do not know how long he will exist but the myth of the Communist Ayatollah must surely soon disappear under the weight of his inherently contradictory label. Enjoy the farce while it lasts.
Attempting to appeal to their own bases, Umno jumped to label him a communist as it is repugnant to the Malays. MCA, still lost in the same woods they found themselves in in 2008, jumped in to paint him as an ‘Ayatollah’, appealing to the Chinese fear of Malaysia becoming a Muslim theocracy.
He cannot be both, as Communists do not subscribe to the concept of religion. Marx described religion as the ‘opiate of the masses’, believing it to be a tool of the ruling classes to keep the people under control.
In fact, PAS deputy president Mat Sabu is neither; and the Communist Ayatollah is another creation of an ever more desperate BN.
Nor are they interested in coordinating their stories. Umno and MCA live still in a mythical pre-2008 world where people will swallow whatever gibberish is shoveled at them.
They then have 'pretend' fights with each other; as MCA president Chua Soi Lek and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin were doing on Friday; intended to make each look like a champion of their respective races. Very droll but also terribly old and over-used.
And of course let us not forget the police and the AG for their slobbering syncophancy in coming up with some way of charging Mat Sabu for, essentially, his opinion. They are, truly, BN’s best friend.
Oxymoronic
Mat Sabu described, quite rightly, the whole business as hilarious.
Into this vicious comedic circle bursts Chua Jui Meng today with the extremely amusing but unarguably accurate view that Chua Soi Lek will never take MCA out of the BN because he will immediately be charged for oral sex by the BN.
That will silence Chua Soi Lek for a while. But not for long, the man would not understand shame if he was hit over the head with it.
So let’s be clear, Communism and Religious Theocracies do not mix. The Communist Ayatollah is therefore an oxymoron, like Honest and BN, or Intelligent and Hishammuddin.
And we have a new label for all these purveyors of fantastical tales.

Stop bluffing and confusing the people, PKR vice president Chua Jui Meng told his former colleagues in MCA and Umno as the two parties drummed up a crescendo over the hudud law issue.
"If Chua Soi Lek has any guts, he will take the MCA out of the BN now. The fact is he can't do that because the moment there is any inkling he is going to, Bukit Aman will call him up over his sex video. The mouse may squeak now and then, but make no mistake, the sword is still hanging over his head," Jui Meng told Malaysia Chronicle.
"As for Muhyiddin and Umno, we challenge them to lay out the time line of when they will implement hudud. Prove to the Malays and the Muslims how sincere you are about Islam by stating a clear and definitive framework for hudud in Malaysia. Otherwise, it is clear as day and night that the two of them, MCA and Umno, are merely playing a coordinated game to split and divide the people again. Muslims and Malays to turn to Umno and the Chinese to the MCA."
Oral sex blackmail?
In 2010, at the height of a power tussle with his predecessor Ong Tee Keat, Soi Lek had said he was thinking of quitting the MCA for the Pakatan Rakyat. Immediately, Soi Lek was called to the police headquarters in Bukit Aman and quizzed for having oral sex with his girlfriend, which in Malaysia is a crime.
In the past week, the issue of implementing hudud law in predominantly Muslim Malaysia has erupted into a political row, albeit drawing lesser public interest than before. Ex-prime minister Mahathir Mohamad started the ball rolling by challenging PAS Spiritual Adviser Nik Aziz to implement it in Kelantan, with PKR de-facto head Anwar Ibrahim supporting Nik Aziz on the issue, while DAP objected.
This situation in Pakatan is nothing new and the three partners have said it many times. If PAS wants to introduce hudud law or an Islamic state, it must have sufficient majority either in the state or federal government to do so. Neither PKR nor DAP will be bound to support it on this motion.
Soi Lek rushes to ram home 'winning point'
“MCA’s stand is very clear. We will object strongly to hudud. If Umno wants to implement hudud, we will pull MCA out of Barisan Nasional - simple as that. Our stand is very clear. Umno wants to implement hudud, MCA is no party to it, we’ll get out of it," Soi Lek told reporters on Friday.
Hudud is arm of the Muslim law that pertains to 6 criminal prosecutions, and is feared because it prescribes punishment that includes stoning to death, the amputation of limbs and whipping. The 6 hudud crimes are theft, highway robbery, illegal sexual intercourse, false accusations of zina or adultlery, drinking alcohol and apostasy.
On Thursday evening, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had said Umno supported hudud law but it was not time yet to implement it. He did not give any clues as to when would be a good time to do so, nor did he lay down any clear plans to introduce hudud.
This prompted many critics to accuse him of trying to hoodwink the Malay and Muslims, because after 5 decades of authoritarian rule, why was UMNO still unprepared for hudud ?
In fact, Soi Lek in his eagerness to ram home what he believes will be a winning point with the Chinese community, nearly gave the game away. Soi Lek and MCA have in recent years fallen onto the wrong side of public opinion due to voter disenchantment, mainly over their perceived fear and inability to stand up to Umno.
“That can be understood because all Muslim support the teachings of the Quran. But you must see his qualifying statement that Malaysia is not ready to implement hudud law. And that’s very clear,” said Soi Lek, explaining why Muhyiddin's comment was acceptable to MCA.
Umno-MCA tango
To Jui Meng, it was good that the hudud issue has broken out into the open again.
"Either way MCA will keep using it as a weapon against Pakatan. So no harm to take the debate into the open. At this point in time, the non-Malays are still concerned because any new system including hudud can change the character of the country but they are not as fearful as before," said Jui Meng.

Racism is not a natural, inevitable phenomenon, nor is it something that “just happens.” It is something that we can fight against. Throughout history, we see that racism is actively promoted and organized by the ruling class. Why? Because the ruling class is numerically only a tiny portion of the population. It cannot possibly impoverish humanity and hold on to its ridiculous amounts of wealth without sowing division among the workers. Racism is an effective tool in the hands of the capitalist class.
Millions of people were abducted from Africa and enslaved in the United States. The slave-owning class in the South owed its wealth to slave labor, people who were worked to death on its plantations. The slave-owning class had to come up with an ideology to justify the enslavement of millions of people. Slavery did not exist because of racism. Racism existed to justify slavery. Of course, the African American community continues to suffer oppression today because racism continues to serve the purpose of the capitalist class in dividing the working class.
Similarly today, racism against Muslims and Arabs, Islamophobia, does not exist because it is somehow natural and normal for people of different religions to hate each other. The ruling class has actively promoted and nurtured Islamophobia. It did not start on Sept. 11, 2001, but it reached new levels because of the purpose it served. The events around 9/11 give us a case study on how the ruling class uses racism to promote its own goals—imperialist plunder, and divide and conquer.
Sept. 11 attacks, PATRIOT Act, Afghan war
On September 11, 2001, I was in 11th grade, and I remember watching events unfold on news stations in class. As the news anchors still had no information as to who the attackers were, I remember thinking to myself, “God … please don’t let it be Muslims.” Even then, as a high school student, I had a glimpse of what was to come.
Domestically, the U.S. government was quick to launch an assault on civil liberties. The government decided to increase security by breaching citizens’ privacy and rights. The PATRIOT Act was used, and continues to be used, for arbitrarily tapping phones, reading e-mails, harassing activists and arresting, interrogating and torturing individuals considered to be terrorism suspects. Sept. 11 gave the ruling class an excuse to increase its powers of repression against the people here in the United States.
But the main function of the spread of Islamophobia was to justify a new wave of military conquests by empire. The Afghanistan war was launched less than a month after 9/11. How were racism and Islamophobia useful to the ruling class? Well, not a single one of the perpetrators of 9/11 was from Afghanistan. And, 10 years later, when the Navy SEALS killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, the occupation of Afghanistan was not altered the slightest bit, laying to rest the notion that capturing bin Laden had been the goal of the occupation.
It was only in an atmosphere of racist hysteria that the occupation of Afghanistan could be justified as an appropriate response to 9/11. In that racist atmosphere, what was the difference between Afghans and Saudi Arabians, people from countries over a thousand miles apart?
This is not to suggest that bombing Saudi Arabia would have been justified. Rather, we are saying that, without the anti-Muslim hysteria, it would have been impossible to justify invading Afghanistan as a just reaction to 9/11.
Eighteen months later, the United States and its allies invaded Iraq. It did not matter that neither Saddam Hussein nor any Iraqi citizens had anything to do with 9/11. In fact, the secular state in Iraq considered Al Qaeda its mortal enemy. But, somehow, the trumped-up issue of “weapons of mass destruction” was linked to 9/11, and the Islamophobic hysteria justified any action against Muslims anywhere, irrespective of whether they had anything to do with 9/11.
The real purpose of the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq was to “redraw the map of the Middle East” to better serve the interests of the U.S. oligarchy. In fact, 9/11 itself, though tragically misguided, was a reaction to decades of U.S. crimes in the Middle East. In Iraq alone, over a million people had already lost their lives as a result of the genocidal sanctions imposed on the people, depriving them of food, medicine and even clean water.
Guantanamo and 'illegal combatants'
Then there was the matter of prisoners of war—people who had resisted the occupation of their lands. Well, they were called “illegal combatants” and denied the protections of international law accorded POWs. A decade later, people are still being held in Guantanamo Bay with no evidence and no due process.
How is it that the highest levels of the U.S. government can defend the existence of torture chambers, not just in Guantanamo, but in Iraq’s Abu Ghraib and in Afghanistan’s Baghram? Again, anti-Muslim bigotry, Islamophobia, comes to the rescue. Much like the enslavement of Africans was justified by depicting them as subhuman, the massive torture and slaughter of Iraqis and Afghans is justified by portraying Muslims as sub-human beings.
Islamophobia in the United States
Of course, the fact that Islamophobia is promoted by the state and the corporate media, itself really an arm of the state, does not mean that more backward elements of the population do not buy into it. There are countless examples of anti-Muslim bigotry that continue to this day. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, several people were attacked and even killed merely for being Muslims or even “looking like” Muslims or wearing turbans. Mosques have been set on fire, the Quran has been burned, Muslims have been forced off planes with no justification, people have been accused of being terrorists, and the list goes on and on.
At my high school, one of our teachers would not allow us to miss sixth period on Fridays for prayer, saying, “Why don’t you pray on Sunday like the rest of us?” On the street, people have yelled at me, calling me, “Diaper head.”
When I worked for the Census in late 2009, I would have to go to people’s doors and ask them questions. In a few instances, people refused to talk to me because I didn’t look “American.” Others thought I was selling my religion and a few even made more offensive comments, such as stopping me mid-sentence and asking “Are you Arab?” to which I replied, “Yes.” Next thing I knew, a door was slammed in my face.
Islamophobia continues to serve the interests of the imperialist establishment. It serves to justify the continued occupation of Palestine by Israel, the U.S. watchdog in the Middle East. It continues to help justify the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The propaganda line is that the demonized Muslim people do not quite know the value of democracy, human rights and self-governance, so the U.S. government has to help these lesser peoples by bombing their cities, towns and villages.
Ongoing outcomes of Islamophobia
The state and the corporate media have to continue stirring things up. The government and media controlled by those in power have a definite interest in maintaining fear and hatred toward Muslims. An example is the anti-Shari’a laws being introduced in over two dozen states.
The idea that the United States needs to be protected against the imposition of Islamic law is simply ludicrous. When it comes to separation between church and state, a greater concern should be protecting us from the legal imposition of extremist Christian values enshrined in law. In any case, the anti-Shari'a law movement is being spearheaded by openly racist elements.
According to a 2010 survey of Muslim youths aged 11 to 18, conducted by the Washington-based advocacy group Muslim Mothers Against Violence, every respondent reported being called a name because of their faith, including 80 percent who said they had been called “terrorist.”
Another outcome of the pervasiveness of Islamophobia occurred in Europe. On July 22, Anders Behring Breivik detonated a car bomb and massacred 68 people attending a Labor Party youth camp in Norway.
Breivik had written a 1,500-page manifesto explaining his right-wing, anti-immigrant, Islamophobic ideology. An active blogger, Breivik faulted Norway’s Labor Party, the left-wing pro-capitalist party, for “multi-culturalism” and for allowing the “Islamification” of Europe. He saw a “Marxist-Islamic alliance” as a mortal threat to “European Christendom.”
It wasn’t just the act itself that was racist but the reaction to it by officials and the business media. On July 27, Heiner Bielefeldt, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on religion and freedom of belief, stated, “The way in which some public commentators immediately associated the horrifying mass murder in Norway last Friday with Islamist terrorism is revealing and indeed an embarrassing example of the powerful impact of prejudices and their capacity to enshrine stereotypes.”
So, essentially, his Islamophobia, fueled by the world media, is what drove Breivik to kill these innocent peoples.
Mazda Majidi wrote for Liberation about the Norway massacre:
“Right-wing, racist movements and their ideology do not grow in a vacuum. They are one of the ways in which the capitalist ruling class attempts to keep people divided. While advertising itself as grassroots and spontaneous, the Tea Party in the United States is an example of a right-wing movement that has been funded directly and indirectly by big capitalists, such as the Koch brothers.
Only under certain political circumstances have capitalist ruling classes been in favor of the direct ascension of the fascists into political power, and those were periods of extreme crises, when the survival of the system was in question. But extreme right-wing parties and movements serve their class functions at other times, as well.
“Right-wing movements are particularly useful to the ruling class during times of capitalist economic crisis, high unemployment and declining living standards. Fascistic ideologies provide a false explanation for the root cause of the crisis. They promote racism and hatred toward immigrants, people of color and oppressed countries to prevent the formation of unity among the working class and the oppressed, the victims of the capitalist system. Individuals like Breivik are by-products of this right-wing ideology.”
“So long as the capitalist class has political power, racism will thrive, not spontaneously, but promoted and supported by that class.”
The way to combat racism is to struggle for working-class unity and solidarity along the lines of actively fighting racism. An organized, class-conscious working class will bring an end to the capitalist system, along with its inevitable diseases, including racism.”
When the capitalist system is overthrown, the state will no longer be stirring up racism to safeguard its interests. Instead, the state of the working class will be at the forefront of the fight against racism.
Oct. 7 marks the 10-year anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. Did you know that 92 percent of Afghans don’t even know about the 9/11 attacks? This so-called War on Terror has always been a farce and has caused immeasurable amounts of death, devastation and destruction around the world. That in itself is cause to oppose this war. But, in addition to that, money funneled into this war means money withdrawn from health and education in the United States. This siphoning has caused suffering to many working-class families here.
I ask you all to come out on Oct. 7 to the Protest and Die-In for the 10th Anniversary of the Afghanistan War. Translate remembrance into action! Do not be silent! We are all brothers and sisters on this Earth. Not connected at the heart—that is just a beating organ—but by some virtual umbilical cord. Any pain and suffering that happens to one person on this Earth should be felt by us all. Not only should we all identify with victims of the U.S. empire in other countries, we do not have to look far to see pain and suffering because we have
I have now called Islam my religion and way of life for 10 years. During this decade, I have come to realize that the main obstacle to interfaith understanding and mutual respect between Muslims and non-Muslims is the shroud of mystique that still surrounds Islam, despite its spotlight media coverage since that fateful day in September 2001. Therefore, in order to really reach some sort of harmonious coexistence with our neighbors, I believe it is the duty of each Muslim individually to reach out and, in their own unique way, allow the world to understand the details and intricacies of our faith. Only when we open the doors to our homes, to our minds and to our hearts to those around us, can we expect them to comprehend our shared values and appreciate the subtle differences that distinguish us.
One of the most highly misunderstood and misconstrued aspects of our faith is our relationship with the Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him, his family and companions). This misunderstanding is further compounded by the, pardon my bluntness, ridiculous, amateur and uneducated mud-slinging that has transpired over the course of history concerning this man. It is my firm belief that if non-Muslims knew the life story of the Prophet and grasped the depth of his character, their attitudes and feelings toward him and toward our religion as a whole would be much different.
Hence, I would like to embark on a humble project to shed some light on the characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad and how he embodied them during his lifetime. This project will have as its goal to just scratch the surface of this great man's personality and noble actions to allow those unfamiliar with his life and story to get a first glance and possibly learn an historical fact here or there that they were previously unaware of or did not understand.
This project will also be an effort for the benefit of myself and my Muslim brothers and sisters who read the articles to grow in their love and appreciation of this man who worked throughout his life to establish our religion and to embody the most noble of character traits in an effort to show us how to live our own lives more fully.
The first characteristic of the Prophet Muhammad that I will undertake to describe will be his unparalleled kindness. I've chosen to commence my project with this character trait because kindness is so lacking in our world right now. It is the drought of simple acts of kindness toward our families, friends and neighbors that is at the root of global strife. The absence of kindness has allowed greed, corruption and selfishness to creep into the hearts of man, and these qualities are now wreaking havoc in our world -- from widespread economic disparity to politically motivated mass murder and out-of-control consumerism. Despite the abundances that we have on this earth, we are, as a human race, rapidly becoming vacuous and devoid of our human spirit. We need reminders of the people in our past that established greatness through kindness. The Prophet Muhammad was one of these men.
In Sahih al-Bukhari, a collection of authentic sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, it is reported that he said, "Allah (God) is kind and likes kindness in all things" (6601). It has been relayed through the Prophet's family and companions that, although the political, religious, economic and military leader of the Muslims during his lifetime, the Prophet Muhammad never was too busy to be kind. When he received visitors, he always had them to stay until they wanted to leave. When shaking hands, he would never be the first to let go his grip. During and even after the lives of his wives, the Prophet Muhammad was known to show kindness and generosity with his wives' friends and loved ones. Orphans, the elderly and infirm, children, women, animals -- countless stories have been narrated about the Prophet's attention to these members of his community and the emphasis he put on showing kindness toward all.
With all the kindness shown by the Prophet Muhammad, there was one particular group of people that received his particular devotion: mothers. The Prophet realized that mothers not only go through the hardships of pregnancy and labor -- they not only make lifelong sacrifices for the benefit of their children -- but they also are the people in a society who shape and mold the culture and the advancement of the community, as they are the main driving force behind their children's rearing. He saw this and he appreciated the impact of mothers and instilled great respect for mothers into his followers.
It has been narrated by Abu Huraira in Sahih Bukhari that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad and asked, "Oh Allah's Prophet, who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?" The Prophet replied, "Your mother." The man asked, "Who is next?" The Prophet replied, "Your mother." The man further inquired, "And who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man asked for a fourth time, "Who is next?" The Prophet replied, "Your father." This intensity of feeling for mothers, the force behind humanity, showed unprecedented compassion and kindness. It is related that the Prophet Muhammad also stated that Paradise lies at the feet of our mothers, that they are the gateway to eternal bliss and that our bonds with our mothers are of the utmost importance to our humanity.
There are myriad examples of the Prophet's kindness toward every subset of humanity. This has been but a brief introduction. For the sake of this project, I will follow this posting, God willing, with three additional posts concerning the kindness of Prophet Muhammad, specifically focusing on his kindness toward children, toward animals and toward his opponents. Again, it is my hope and prayer through these writings that they will offer a brief glance into the life of the man who made it his life mission to help those around him find God and adopt noble character through prayer, reflection and good works. Perhaps by knowing more about the Prophet Muhammad, we will know more about one another.
