Reportedly, the fire broke out around 8:20 pm on Friday night, and gutted nearly 500 shanties. Around 26 fire engines and a dozen of water tankers were roped in to plunge the fire.
With all the possible attempts by the firemen, the fire was finally doused off in the early hours of Saturday.
As per the latest details, 21 people, including four firemen, were injured, and were immediately admitted in the Bhabha Hospital.
The cause behind the fire is yet to be revealed, but sources alleged that the fire expanded, after one of the factory units in the slum caught fire.
Rubina lost her precious belongings
The Latika of the Oscar winning film, 'Slumdog Millionaire', who spent the night at the Bandra (East) railway station, was supposed to shift to her new abode, provided by the 'Jai Ho' trust, in few months.
However, sadly, the 12-year-old angel has lost all her precious belongings in the fire.
“We all were at home watching TV, when a neighbour came to alert us about the fire. We all rushed out. We spent the entire night at the railway station,” Rubina said, as quoted by The Hindu.
“I have lost everything including books and precious belongings like photographs, newspaper clippings and memorabilia of the film.
“So far nobody has come to help us.”

While Rubina's father said, “We feel relieved to see that all our family members are safe. But all the good memories of my daughter’s fame have been reduced to ashes. We have lost everything.”

atte ran the whole gamet, it touched all emotions. Clever idea the way the story was revealed and it showed it all. The horrenduous conditions of the slums, seeing their mother get killed with a steel bar, the slum boss and what he did to the children, and the hope and dreams of believing in Love and Destiny.

And I guess the fact that the love story is so beautiful and it ends so lovely that they are together that... that feeling of euphoria from the viewer forgets how disturbing everything really is.

That's why it was surreal to wake up after randomly watching it last night and read this story about this little girl. Like wait, how is she still living in the slums after 2 years the film was released?

The perspectives are different. The benefactors are busy trying to calculate a way to help the child while leaving the rest of her family in the slum. Often they find these family members grasping and "not deserving". They want to do something for the child that will lift her and only her out of poverty, sometime in the future.

When your father is sick, and lying collapsed on the floor, you don't care about all these moralizations. You want cash, you want it now, and you want it shared with everybody, your mom, your little brother, your grandpa. In simple brutal terms this is all that matters.

It is cruel to give any of these children a glimpse of the other side without any intention of allowing them close to the fire. It is, I would think, even crueller to offer them a way out on the condition that they are the only ones allowed to make the break. After all we would not a flood of "those people" demanding too much, now would we? Only the chosen few and only in the way that we allow.

The young girl from Yemen was not smart to turn down her scholarship in protest, but she was certainly very perceptive, and she had her finger on an important truth: she was only being toyed with, and in fact no one really cared. Her reaction was wrong, but it was heartfelt. I understood her anger.

Rubina is crossing a similar minefield. Be understanding.

You're taking a typical rich Westerner approach, infantilizing the father and other family authority figures. Look at it this way. They've been offered an apartment they may live in, but not own. They also may not use it as one would normally use a significant asset (rent it out, sell it, use for loan collateral). Hey, guess what, I would be upset too! There may be a hundred reasons they don't want to live in the apartment--moving into a better neighborhood may represent a set of secondary costs they cannot afford, for example (would they need a car? appliances? increased taxes?). The family members are being dictated to. Same with the money.

Seriously, what's with all the strings? What would the father do with it, besides start a small business or buy a house? Is there some secret gambling addiction we're not being told about?

No. Everyone like you is just assuming the father is too underhanded, simple, and venal to decide what to do with an apartment and any significant amount of money. You're also undermining his legal rights and his place as head of the family. The Lohan and Cyrus families are allowed to ride their children to the bank, but not, it would seem, poor Indians. This is complicated, but your approach is very bothersome to me.

I remember the little girl from Yemen who went alone into the court and demanded a divorce from her 50 year old husband. She was given awards all over the world for her bravery, and was flown to New York to be awarded Elle's Woman of the Year award. She made an odd little figure beside all the 6 foot beauties, was fussed over, and then--sent back to her slum in Sa'ana.

When she came back, her father asked her chaperone where was his million dollars. Why would you get a million dollars, the woman asked.

The man had some kind of expectation that if multi-multi-multi millionaires like fashion industry executives had taken an interest in his daughter and flown her to New York, they would follow up that interest by giving her some fraction of their abundant wealth. He was genuinely confused that a) very rich people would profess to admire his daughter without offering to do any such thing and b) whatever she did get, her family was not expected to have a share in.

The girl got a scholarship to attend school, but stopped going in anger when her father got sick and lay on the floor of their miserable little house coughing his life away. The social worker came out and said, go to school. She said no. You people do not really care about us, you pretend to, but you don't.

Two firemen and 23 residents were injured in the blaze. Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out on the top floor of a four-storey shanty where the two brothers resided with their mother. But several local politicians, activists, and even Mumbai mayor Shraddha Jadhav said that the possibility of sabotage cannot be ruled out as the sprawling slum lies on prime property. "There have been many incidents of fire in this neighbourhood in the past and we feel there is a strong case for arson. There should be a thorough investigation into all these incidents," Jadhav said. Activist Medha Patkar on Saturday also demanded an inquiry into the cause of the fire. "The possibility of the involvement of a developer cannot be ruled out," she said.Fire officials refused to comment on the cause of the blaze, saying it was "still unclear". The fire started from the centre of the plot at 7.45 pm on Friday night and spread to the north and south side because of multiple cylinder blasts, officials said. They described the blaze as one of the biggest in the city in the last two years. With no basic facilities and infrastructure, and only a single-phased electric circuit to take care of the needs of thousands of small industrial units, the slum was a death trap when the fire broke out. Fire chief Uday Tatkare said: "We cannot say anything until our investigations are over."Eyewitnesses insist that the fire was set off by two brothers, Anees (28) and Nafees (30) when they began fighting. Though neighbours were unable to explain how a fight could result in a fire, they roughed up the duo. Anees, who earns a living acting in B-grade Hindi films, is recuperating in a hospital while his older brother is absconding. "They were drunk and began fighting. Suddenly we saw flames erupt from the top floor, but the brothers kept exchanging blows. Their mistake has cost us our homes," said Javed Sheikh, 32-year-old driver whose house abuts the brothers' four-storey shanty. The rickety structure was bang in middle of several hundred multi-storey shanties standing cheek-by-jowl on a 1.4 acre strip of land. The land is jointly by the Railways and and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Local corporator Manmohan Chonkar said: "There is no evidence of a short-circuit or arson. It is purely a tragedy caused by carelessness of two individuals, who in their drunken stupor put many lives at risk. There should be an inquiry into the incidents and the guilty be brought to book as early as possible." The sprawling slum enclave was a hotbed for unauthorized constructions, alteration and additions. Three years ago, the Railways and BMC jointly carried out a demolition drive to remove encroachments along the pipeline. The last demolition drive at Garib Nagar took place in May 2009. "Slumdog Millionaire" child star that raged through a crowded slum in the Indian city of Mumbai. Most of the awards that she received for her role as a poverty-stricken child in the Oscar-winning film were destroyed in the blaze that erupted in the Garib Nagar slum late Friday, the 12-year-old said.
