Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim was never given a chance to defend himself, contrary to what former premier Mahathir Mohamad wrote in his memoir.
“I followed Anwar to the 38th floor of Putra World Trade Centre for the Umno supreme council meet. He was never given a chance to answer the charges. Mahathir began the meeting by saying that he wanted Anwar sacked from the party,” Machang MP Saifuddin Nasution told a press conference on Thursday.
Both Anwar and Saifuddin were Umno leaders at that time. Anwar was both Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, but he fell from grace after allegedly refusing to bail out one of Mahathir’s sons from the Asian financial crisis.
Pundits who have followed the 1998 incident have also accused Mahathir of jealousy towards Anwar, who was proving to be more popular than him within their Umno party.
Hence, the trumped-up sodomy charges which were overthrown in 2004, just months after Mahathir finally stepped down. Even so, Anwar had to spend 6 years in jail although the sodomy ‘victim’ had already testified that he had not been sodomized at all and had been coerced into making the false accusations.
It was then that the Malaysian judiciary finally lost its reputation for integrity. The court assembled by Mahathir was condemned worldwide and labelled a kangaroo trial because the judge refused to accept or consider any evidence that favoured Anwar.
A legacy of spite and hate
On Thursday, Saifuddin recounted how Mahathir had brushed aside any opposition from the other Umno supreme council members. In the end, his iron will won and none of them dared to oppose him.
“In his book, Mahathir also said that former IGP Hanif Omar had warned him of Anwar’s wrongdoings as far back as in the early 1990s,” said Saifuddin.
“But everyone who is slated for a high government post must go through a personality clearance, administered by Bukit Aman. If Hanif had evidence against Anwar then, how could Anwar have managed to be a minister, the education minister and then the deputy prime minister?”
Mahathir launched his book “A Doctor in the House” earlier this week. He had harsh words for all of his ‘enemies’ including Singapore’s minister mentor Lee Kuan Yew, whom he accused of wanting to become Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s much-awaited book entitled “A Doctor in the House: The Memoirs of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad” has caused a sensation since it was launched as he has openly admitted that he has Indian blood and boldly revealed the so-called “inside stories” of the sex scandal.
We can find many memoirs of politicians in bookstores but only those which have exposed secrets and caused hot debates are sold like hot cakes. Otherwise, they might end up as embellishments on the shelves.
Mahathir is a politician with a strong personality. He ruled authoritatively during his term of office and it triggered many controversies. After holding political power for a few decades, he had also made many enemies. The Operasi Lalang, judicial and constituency crises, as well as other front-page stories were related to him.
He had been struggling with Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew for a few decades and contracted enmity with a few former deputy prime ministers, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in particular. These elements are more than enough to attract the public to read his book.
The book is 809 pages long and about 20 pages of them are detailed description of the sex scandal involving his political opponent Anwar, showing us how much he hates Anwar. As some of the content might trigger a defamation controversy, it is believed that Anwar will soon make a counter attack and start another endless lawsuit. This has enhanced its readability and appeal. As for whether the readers would choose to wholly believe it, it depends on their own stand and judgment.
Objectively speaking, as the front-line participants and direct witnesses, if politicians are faithful to history, their memoirs will undoubtedly provide first-hand information to historical studies. They will have a very precious historical value. However, if their memoirs are written based on their personal opinions, then they will be inevitably subjective. As readers, if there is no related historical data for references, it is better not to wholly believe them.
A critic criticised a politician’s memoirs: “His memoirs has proven two points. Firstly, he has a wealth of imagination and secondly, he has a bad memory. This has enabled him to achieve such a goal: He did all right in the past.” This can actually be used to describe many memoirs in the market.
It reminded me of Wei Xiaobao, the main character of novel “The Deer and the Caldron” written by Jin Yong. One of Wei’s greatest skills is to lie without flaw. It is not because he is good in lying. Instead, it is because he is so good in telling the truth. Most of the time, he first tells the truth until everyone believes him and adds only a lie to his story at the most critical moment when the listeners have lost vigilance.
Isn’t detecting the lie among the truths told in the memoirs of politicians the most challenging task?

Biblical passages recognized, controlled, and regulated the practice.
The Bible and Rabbinic Teachings permitted owners to beat their slaves severely, even to the point of killing them. Paul had every opportunity to write in one of his Epistles that human slavery — the owning of one person as a piece of property by another — is profoundly evil. His letter to Philemon would have been an ideal opportunity to vilify slavery.
But Paul of Tarsus wrote not one word of criticism. Instead, he wrote the following:
“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. ” (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)
Jesus (Yeshua Bar Yehosef), himself a Jew, could have condemned the practice. He might have done so. He could have done so.
